5 Graphic Design Terminologies Explained
Graphic design is a complex field that requires a specific knowledge and understanding of various terminologies. However, clients who are not familiar with the industry may find themselves confused by some of the terms and concepts used by designers.
Here are five commonly misunderstood graphic design terminologies:
Composition: refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a design, such as the use of colour, shape, and space. However, some clients may interpret this term as the overall design itself, rather than the specific organization of elements within it.
Hierarchy: refers to the organization and prioritization of elements within a design, allowing the viewer to easily understand and navigate the content. However, some clients may interpret this term as a hierarchy of importance among different design elements, rather than the visual arrangement of those elements.
Typography: is the art and technique of arranging type, including the selection of font, size, and spacing. However, some clients may interpret this term as simply the font used in a design, rather than the broader concept of type arrangement.
Contrast: is the use of opposing elements, such as light and dark or large and small, to create visual interest and draw attention to specific areas of a design. However, some clients may interpret this term as the overall difference between different design elements, rather than the specific use of opposing elements.
Proximity: refers to the placement of elements in relation to one another, creating a sense of organization and connection. However, some clients may interpret this term as simply the physical distance between design elements, rather than the broader concept of their relationship and placement.
We understand as designers that it is important for us to clearly explain these as well as other key terminologies in order to effectively communicate with clients and ensure that they understand the design process.
